UT AgResearch to host Tobacco, Beef and More Field Day

Highland Rim Center is celebrating 70th anniversary

The Highland Rim AgResearch and Education Center in Springfield will host the Tobacco, Beef and More Field Day on Thursday, June 27, 2013. Registration begins at 7 a.m., an industry/educational trade show opens at 7:30 and tours will begin at 8:15.

The field day comes as the Highland Rim AgResearch and Education Center is celebrating its 70th anniversary.  Since 1943 this center has been a key location for the development, management and curing of dark and burley tobacco. The center is also well known as a leading site for cow-calf management research and crop variety development.

“The Highland Rim AgResearch and Education Center has contributed much to the success of Tennessee agriculture,” says Dr. Barry Sims, center director. “The research conducted here has improved the profitability of beef and crop producers across the region, and field days like Tobacco, Beef and More help us share technology advancements with farmers first hand.”

Tobacco, Beef and More is a free event. It features a total of eight presentations targeted to beef and tobacco producers. Topics include dark and burley tobacco varieties, irrigation, strip tillage tobacco, cattle marketing, calf and cow nutrition research and a calving demonstration. Pesticide re-certification points are available in Categories 1, 10 and 12. Two points will be awarded for each category.  CCA credits are also available.

Field Day participants can get free pH readings on soil samples brought to the Trade Show.  Debbie Joines, Manager of the Soil, Plant Pest Center will have her equipment in a booth to run pH readings on soil samples for free.

The tours will conclude at approximately 12:30 p.m. when visitors can enjoy a complimentary lunch consisting of steak sandwich, chips, and cold drinks.   For more information, contact your local UT Extension office, or you can call the Highland Rim AgResearch and Education Center at 615-382-3130.
