Preparing For Colder Days Ahead

Cold weather is inching its way into Jefferson County and, like it or not, freezing temperatures are on the horizon. Though the County and much of the South experienced a very mild Winter of 2012, forecasters are all over the board in their predictions for Winter 2013. As the days grow increasingly shorter, it is time to prepare for what is to come. It is important that parents have a cold weather plan for their children. For those that ride the bus in the early morning hours, special care is needed to insure that they are kept warm. Appropriate clothing, such as a coat, socks, hat and gloves are needed to protect fingers, toes and ears and to allow the child to maintain proper body temperature. If possible, have the child wait in the home until time for the bus to arrive or drive them to the bus stop and let them wait in the warm car. Children also need protection from rainy weather, in the form of an umbrella, rain jacket and boots. Children and seniors are particularly sensitive to cold temperatures. Their homes should remain at 68 degrees or above. Seniors also need proper attire for cold weather and should always wear a hat and gloves, as they lose much of their body temperature from their head and poor circulation can make fingers susceptible to hyperthermia. This is also the time to have a snow plan for days that the roads are impassable. Keeps some sustainable food, such as canned soup, in the pantry and remember that the power often goes off in bad weather so an alternative heating source is necessary. Check the batteries on flashlights to ensure that they work and consider purchasing emergency lighting for seniors and children. Seniors that live alone need a phone source that is not impacted by the loss of power. Seniors also need a clear and ice free walk way to lessen the chances of falling. Pets are also susceptible to cold weather and need a place to get warm. Appropriate housing, with warm bedding and shelter, are necessary. Water freezes in cold temperatures and pets will need their water checked often. Have a plan for extreme cold temperatures, such as moving outdoor pets to the basement, garage or indoors. A little planning can take the stress out of cold or bad weather and make snow days, fun days.
