Recently, the Disney Company bought out the Star Wars franchise, in an effort to extend their audience base, particularly with the 90’s generation. Initially, Disney re-released The Lion King, a favorite of those raised in the 1990s,and followed with their purchase of Star Wars. In addition, the company teamed up with the popular cosmetics company Sephora, releasing three limited edition Disney Princess themed lines that appeal to the young adult market. The last of the Sephora series coincides with The Little Mermaid release of the movie in theaters for the second time and final time. After September 20th, the movie made its final debuted in only 16 cinemas nation wide, including the Carmike Wynnsong 16 on North Peters RD in Knoxville. Though the movie release is a flash from the past, Disney has a firm foothold on current technology and any owner of an iPad can download an exclusive app called The Little Mermaid: Second Screen Live. The app is meant to be used during the movie to unlock exclusive themed games, audience competitions, film interactions, and sing alongs while enjoying the film. The Little Mermaid, a beloved classic, will no longer be available to view on the big screen after October 1st, as it is being released that day on Blu-ray and HD Digital. However, there aren’t many chances to relive the 90’s movies in theaters and Disney is affording fans this unique opportunity to experience a new digitally interactive cinema experience with an original Disney classic. It provides a double win for Disney, with marketing opportunities for both the 1990s generation and a new generation of Disney aficionados.
