State Representative Jeremy Faison(R-Cosby) met with the Department of Labor and Work Force Development Commissioner, Burns Phillips on Wednesday afternoon to discuss the unemployment issues that affect our state. Representative Faison wanted to address the high volume of calls that he has received in his office during the past several weeks. He also wanted to gain a better understanding of the entire unemployment application process. Commissioner Phillips and the Department of Workforce and Development understand that there is a problem with the current infrastructure of the system. However, the department plans to reconstruct the system in eighteen months. The reconstruction of the system will allow claimants to be able to self-correct mistakes made on the automated system, which is a feature that was not available before.

“Knowing the department is taking the right measures for a long term fix, makes me confident that Commissioner Phillips and the department will have a solution for Tennesseans with unemployment problems,” said Representative Faison. Commissioner Phillips advised Representative Faison to encourage all of his constituents to set up a pin number when applying for unemployment. This is a helpful tip that would eliminate a road block that many claimants face when accessing their claim. Commissioner Phillips plans to give more helpful tips and useful information regarding unemployment at the House Consumer and Resource Committee on Wednesday, February 5th at 10:30 am.
