Jefferson County’s track & field team should be one that the rest of the state should take notice of. Looking to build off of last year’s success, JCHS coach Bill Delozier is excited about his team and their opportunities “Overall we are pretty solid this year. We are expected to be in the mix at the state level.” But not just in one or two events, Jefferson County wants to have someone in every event in Murfreesboro come May.

“Zack Myers is coming back as the 4th ranked discus thrower in the state from last year. We expect Dearies Jones and Tanner Stepp in the long jump and should both qualify for the state if they do what they are supposed to.” Delozier said. He added, “Tanner should also be right in the mix for the triple jump and high jump we hope.” On the girls side Delozier is just as excited, “Our girls relays, we have almost all of those girls coming back, which qualified for the state last year.” He went on to say, “ Jordan Jennings also qualified last year for the 400(meters) and we have also added Abby Bateman as someone who could compete at state in the 400(meters).” He also added that King College signee Hannah Green would lead the charge for the distance runners, along with Ian Greer. Also, Junior Haney is leading the charge for the sprinters.

Jefferson County’s recent success has them making high goals for the 2014 season. “We expect to win the conference each year, that is our expectation it’s not our goals.” He added “ Now we want to compete on that state level, we used to take maybe one student athlete if we were lucky(to state tournament). Now we want to take 15-20 to be honest.”

*** Fundraising for the Track Team***

The Jefferson County Track & Field team’s need sponsors for this upcoming year. They do raise money for themselves selling certain things throughout the year. However, to have a full functioning Track & Field team Head Coach Bill Delozier estimated it would cost $15,000 per season. They are doing what they call a “10 for 20” fundraiser right now, which is 10 athlete’s get 10 people to donate $20 to sponsor them. They also sell signs that will hang at each event this season, as well as advertisements in local media outlets. Delozier says those run anywhere from $100 to whatever you want to spend. If interested in helping Jefferson County with the cost of this ongoing season please contact Head Coach Bill Delozier or Athletic Director Randy Rogers.
