The Jefferson County softball team scored 5 runs in the first inning en route to a big 10-4 win over Union County on Monday night. The Lady Patriots were pleased to get back into the win column after a tough weekend in the Choo-Choo classic in Chattanooga. “I’m proud of the girls, we took advantage of some Union County errors. We kept putting runs on the board, we had 15 hits, so that’s good those are the positives.” Head Coach Bekkah Massaro explained.

Jefferson County got it started early in the first inning, as leadoff Summer Hayes would slap a single and later score on one of Union County’s 7 errors. The Lady Pats would plate 5 runs in the top half of the inning and lead 5-0 after one. Each team would score a run in the second inning, leaving Jefferson County in control 6-1. Jefferson County would score 4 more runs in the fifth inning, as Union County scored some runs later in the contest to make the score respectable. The Lady Patriots would cruise to their second win of the season 10-4.

Leslie Odom would get the win on the hill for the Lady Patriots, striking out 2 while not allowing a walk. She threw 88 pitches, placing 66 of them across the plate for strike. She would also lead her team from the dish, going 2-5 with a single, double, and 2 RBI’s. Walters State signee, Summer Hayes, would also go 2-5 at the plate with a single and a double as well. Hayes would also steal the only base in the contest.

Despite the win, Head Coach Bekkah Massaro still sees plenty of room for improvement, “We’ve really got to cut down on our errors. It’s not hustle errors, it’s not we are busting our butts to get there and just not making the plays, its fundamentals.” She added, “ Otherwise our wins are going to be few and far between.” She closed saying, “ All of those things are correctable, if we correct those things we have a solid team , a really good team that can make a run.”

The Lady Patriots improve to 2-8 on the season and return to action Tuesday night at Morristown West before returning home to take on Sevier County on Thursday at 6pm
