Briggs’ Walk Off Single Ends Streak For Patriots

Jefferson County’s seven game losing streak came to an end Thursday night, in dramatic fashion. It took extra innings, and with bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth Kyle Briggs blooped a single to left field. A diving attempt was made by the Greeneville outfielder, but to no avail as it fell to the ground scoring Eli Devotie from third base.

“I am happy we won one..” Jefferson County Head Coach Gaines Cox said. During the Patriots’ seven game losing streak they had lost 3 of them by just one run. He added “During this stretch, we’ve been in some and we’ve been out of some and I told the guys just continue with the process. I’m proud of the effort today.”

Jefferson County jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, oddly enough on only one hit in the inning by Kyle Briggs. The Greeneville Green Devils were able to plate a run in the second inning and 3 runs in the third to tie the game after 3, 4-4. The two teams were held scoreless in the fourth, however would swap 2 runs in the fifth and one run in the sixth leaving the score tied at 7 heading to the final inning. Jefferson County would leave 2 runners on base in the bottom half of the inning and we were heading for a little extra baseball. Greeneville would let their opportunity in the eighth slip away as they left their man stranded on third base. Jefferson County would sit the Green Devils down in order in the ninth and win it in the bottom half 8-7.

With the win Jefferson County improves to 7-9 on the year and will play Cocke County at home at 7pm Tuesday night.

Jefferson County fell behind early Saturday 3-0 thanks in large part to a first inning home run by the Irish. The Patriots battled back tying the game in the top half of the fourth inning at 4-4. The Fighting Irish were just too much in the end for the Patriots as they fell 6-5. The Irish have now won 8 games in a row, while the Patriots drop to 7-10 on the season as well as losing 8 of their last 9 ball games.
