Gardening With Children

I am hoping to encourage my grandchildren to get outside a little more this summer and have planned several activities that I think that they might enjoy. One thing that I am looking forward to is doing a little gardening. I say a little because I have never attempted a garden before. I am looking for some veggies that grow quickly because I am afraid that the kids might lose interest if they take a long time to produce. Do you have any suggestions?

Unfortunately, some of the fastest growing produce is probably not going to be the most interesting to children. Leafy veggies, like spinach and lettuce, are fast growing. If you are looking for something that the grandkids can pick, you might look into green beans or radishes. Some varieties of these are fast growing and they are more fun to harvest. In the meantime, you could keep the little ones interested in gardening by allowing them to water the veggies and, perhaps, planting fun things like potatoes, zucchini, squash and cherry tomatoes.
