A Holiday Scare

I hope everyone had a fun and safe holiday! July 4th is always a fun event with fireworks and picnics. “Shaking The Lake” outdid itself again! Hats off to “The Point” for providing the entertainment. I remember when the town provided a fun July 4th day. There were events scheduled at the football field at Maury that lasted into the night. Each year, there were those who believed they could catch the greased pig, or climb the greased pole. Only “the few” accomplished the task and reaped the reward. Most fell by the wayside, leaving the pig laughing, along with the spectators. I personally never tried either, but I sure did enjoy laughing at those who did.

Like you, I have many memories of Independence Day, as this is a perfect day for making memories. Most float into each other with family and friends, good food, swimming, children playing, ice cream making and watermelon, but one stands out among the others. It was years ago when my daughter was almost two years old. As usual, the family gathered to celebrate the day. And, as usual, the food was spread outside on long tables made with wooden planks and saw horses. Since everyone was a really good cook, the food was fabulous and bountiful. My mother-in-law had my daughter and they were enjoying the festivities when something very strange happened. I saw someone running down the road, away from the house. I felt the adrenalin rise, as I realized it was my mother-in-law. So, where was my daughter? I rushed to where they had been, to find my daughter choking on something. Without thinking, I proceeded to pull out of her throat, a chicken bone. It is amazing how our “fight or flight” responses work. It seems my mother-in-law was in flight and thank goodness mine kicked into fight. It was scary only when the bone was in my hand, and my daughter was in my arms. At this point, I almost panicked, requiring my husband’s helping hands.

Yes, this is a July 4th memory I will never forget, and one I hope to never repeat.
