James W. (Bill) Potts has announced his candidacy for Jefferson County Commission’s Fifth District Seat.

With eight years of service to the Jefferson County Tax Equalization Board and an additional eight years as a Jefferson County Commissioner for the Eighth District, Potts is well qualified for this position. He is a Certified Public Administrator, having received his certification from the University of Tennessee in June 1996. In 2003, The Tennessee County Commissioners Association presented him with a Certificate of Achievement for his previous work as a Jefferson County Commissioner.

Potts was born and raised in the Swannsylvania community of Jefferson County. He then moved to Rochelle, Illinois where he spent 20 years working for Swift and Company. While residing in Rochelle, he was elected to the Board of Trustees for the Village of Hillcrest, serving diligently for 12 years. He spent eight of those years in charge of the streets and four in charge of the Police Department.

After retiring from Swift and Company, Potts moved back to the Swannsylvania community in Jefferson County, Tennessee. For the past four years, he has resided in the Fifth District.

Potts is a retired Sergeant Major in the U.S. Army. He was awarded the Outstanding Recipient Award by the Chicago Tribune. He now serves on the Board of Directors for the Mossy Creek Cruzers Car Club and is an avid classic car enthusiast. The Mossy Creek Cruzers is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping underprivileged children by supporting local charities with their car shows and other fundraising events. Potts attends Flat Gap Baptist Church.

Potts has four children. His son Jim is a prominent and upstanding citizen of Jefferson County. Jim is a deputy for the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department and teaches Criminal Justice at Jefferson County High School. Potts’ other three children live out of the area.

Potts is enthusiastic about the opportunity to work with other Commissioners and with the County Mayor for the betterment of Jefferson County and its residents. He will listen to and consider all points of view and will take his responsibilities very seriously.
