Crossroads Downtown Partnership Morristown Events, July 10 & 11, 2014

As part of grant awarded by the Tennessee Dept. of Economic and Community Development through their Three Star Program to the Morristown Area Chamber of Commerce, the Crossroads Downtown Partnership is holding several events this week of interest to Lakeway residents. The presenter is Ms. Brenda Sutton of Fogwood Foods. Ms. Sutton has made it her life’s work to provide farmer and consumer education. She was an Extension Agent and an Extension Director in North Carolina, is a farmer, and continues to work in the field of healthy, safe, local food sales and consumption.

“Ms. Sutton has a long relationship with Tennessee and has presented at the Tennessee Horticultural and Farmers Market Expo. Mannie Bedwell, Hamblen County Extension Director and I first met her at that conference and since then have looked for ways to bring her to East Tennessee,” says Barbara Garrow, Program Director for Crossroads Downtown Partnership. She is just excellent to listen to and has a knack for presenting useful information and tips on how to quickly prepare fresh, local foods.

All of these events are free and open to the public.

Crossroads Downtown Partnership is the certified Main Street Program for the City of Morristown. It has direct responsibility for the operation of the Morristown Farmers Market. These programs are part of an effort to recognize that fresh local foods are part of what will help the City of Morristown and the Lakeway Region become sustainable. “Learning to eat and how to prepare fresh local foods is a key part of this region becoming sustainable and thrive,” says Ms. Garrow. In the fall, Ms. Sutton will be returning to Morristown and will be working with the agriculture classes at East and West High Schools and with the Greenhouse Program at Walter’s State.
