Enoch Post 73 in First Round of Open Championship

Buccaneer.289.1245.KThe first round of the 2014 Open Championship came to an end Thursday evening and former ETSU men’s golfer Rhys Enoch (Cornwall, England) finished with a 1-over-par 73 at Royal Liverpool Golf Club.

Enoch, who was in the second-to-last group to tee off in round one, enters Friday’s second round in a tie for 66th and tees off at 5:54 a.m. ET.

The former Atlantic Sun Freshman of the Year and four-time all-conference selection totaled four birdies, 10 pars, three bogeys and a double bogey in his debut at golf’s oldest major. Three of Enoch’s birdies came during a four-hole stretch where he went from being two-over to even-par following the final birdie on the par-4, No. 12. From there, Enoch parred five of his last six holes, with a bogey coming on the par-4, 14th.

Enoch is seven shots back of leader Rory McIlroy – who signed his national letter of intent with ETSU back in 2004 – as he fired a 6-under 66 on Thursday.

The cut line for the Open Championship is determined by the lowest 70 scores, including ties, in the opening two rounds of the tournament.

Enoch qualified for the Open Championship on July 1 after winning a playoff at the Woburn Golf Club in central England. The former PING All-American fired rounds of 70 and 68, and secured his spot in the Open Championship by chipping in for birdie on the first playoff hole.

Enoch played for ETSU from 2007-2012 and earned an individual berth to the NCAA Championship in 2010 after sharing medalist honors in the NCAA Regional.
