carson-newman sports logoHead baseball coach Tom Griffin accepted Miami Marlins closer and Carson-Newman alumnus Steve Cishek’s ice bucket challenge to help raise awareness for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease.

Cishek, a member of the 2007 Eagle team that won the South Atlantic Championship, nominated his former head coach in a video that can be found on the Marlins website.

As part of the ice bucket challenge, Griffin challenged Carson-Newman Director of Athletic Communications Adam Cavalier, Carson-Newman men’s basketball head coach Chuck Benson, University of Georgia pitching coach Fred Coral and Cleveland State Community College head baseball coach Mike Policastro. The four gentleman have 24 hours to dump a bucket of ice water over their head or make a donation to fight ALS.

The ice bucket challenge has been sweeping the nation over the past couple weeks as it has helped the ALS Association raise $4 million in donations compared to $1.12 million at this time last year. The ALS Association has been using the hashtag #IceBucketChallenge to spread the word.
