As Jefferson County head coach, Kenny Cobble, addressed his team after Tuesday night’s scrimmage with 13-time state champion, Alcoa, he asked for one thing—details. He told his team, “ the difference between a great program and a program that is going to be good every now and then, is details.” He added “Things like staying on our blocks until the whistle, defense pursuing to the whistle.”

This was not just you’re ordinary scrimmage, as lineman and skill position players went through 1-on-1 periods against players from opposite school, much like a regular practice. Jefferson County was able to compete at a high level during those periods and gave some optimism to coaches and fans alike. “1-on-1 we competed, competed, competed” Cobble said.

Jefferson County was improved on the offensive side of the ball, moving the ball very efficiently, but was not able to dent the endzone in the scrimmage. Even though the offense did not score, Cobble says he is excited about the offensive performance. “ The exciting thing for me is we moved the ball, and then we got down there and weren’t able to finish it a couple of times.” He is also pleased overall with his team’s progress “ Although the scoreboard doesn’t show it we are better now than we were Friday night against Loudon and we were better against Loudon than we were against ourselves before that.”

As Jefferson County heads into their final fall scrimmage Friday night at Carter High School, Coach Cobble is looking for one thing, “ I want to correct any mistake that was an effort mistake, the football stuff we will work on, but if we are not sustaining blocks to the whistle or we are not pursuing to the whistle, that is an effort issue and we are going to fix that the next 2 days.”
