Carson-Newman “Great School at Great Price,” “Up-and-Comer”

Carson-Newman University has been called both a “great school at a great price” and a “up-and-comer” by U.S. News & World Report in its 2015 Best Colleges rankings released Tuesday. The University was also named No.14 among 98 schools featured in the South’s Best Regional Colleges category.

“Carson-Newman is always honored when national publications notice our good work,” said Dr. Kina Mallard, the University’s executive vice president and provost. “We particularly believe that U.S. News & World Report’s recognition of Carson-Newman’s value and its positioning for the future are good indicators of where we are and where we are going. It speaks to the innovative minds and cutting edge work of our administration, faculty and staff as we continue to adapt to the needs of students in the 21st century.”

Only four schools in the Regional Colleges in the South category were named as “Up-and-Comers.” This designation was determined through a survey of college presidents, provosts, and admissions deans. These administrators were asked to nominate institutions they believe have recently made the most promising and innovative changes in the areas of academics, faculty, student life, campus or facilities.

A total of 10 schools classified as Regional Colleges in the South were included in the “Great Schools, Great Prices” list; Carson-Newman was noted as No. 6. In compiling the great price list the publication says that it considers a school’s academic quality and the 2013-14 net cost of attendance for a student who received the average level of need-based financial aid. The higher quality of the program and the lower the cost, the better the deal, says U.S. News.

Last month Carson-Newman was cited by Washington Monthly as America’s No. 7 Baccalaureate College. The University was also recently again named a “Best in the Southeast” by The Princeton Review in its 2015 listings.

Carson-Newman University is a private, Christian liberal arts institution. Founded in 1851, Carson-Newman is located in Jefferson City, Tennessee, among the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains.
