On September 4, 2014, the senior cosmetology class at Jefferson County High School participated in a classroom competition using skills mastered throughout the cosmetology program of study to create various hairstyles. Local hairstylists judged, critiqued, and selected mannequins to represent the three cosmetology categories that take place during the Skills USA competition at the Tennessee Valley Fair in Knoxville. The student works selected to represent JCHS include Rebekah Briggs in the formal category, Arleth Juarez in the braids category, and Mariana Mora in the casual category. All of these students placed in the top 3 in the finals; Rebekah Briggs and Arleth Juarez received first place in their respective categories and Mariana Mora was selected as second place in casual designs. Mrs. Leatherwood, JCHS cosmetology teacher, stated, “I am extremely proud of all of my students. Senior cosmetology students must be dedicated, hardworking, and passionate about the field. I am impressed by the effort and energy each of my students has placed in their work and look forward to seeing them succeed.” Community members may view the selected cosmetology mannequins from September 5-14 at the Tennessee Valley Fair.
