WSCC Professor Honored By Tennessee Communications Association

A Walters State Community College faculty member has been honored by a state organization for his contributions to the field of speech communications.

Malcolm McAvoy, head of the speech communication department, was honored with the Dorotha Nortan Spirit of Service Award during the Tennessee Communication Association’s annual conference.

“Malcolm is a very dedicated faculty member and this award is certainly deserved,” said Dr. Lori Campbell, vice president of academic affairs at the college.

The award is named for the late Dorotha Norton, a noted communications professor at the University of Tennssee-Martin. The award is presented to someone who has selflessly served the professional organization and contributed to the field.

McAvoy joined the Walters State faculty in 1971, shortly after the college opened. For many years, he served as the coach and advisor for the college’s debate team, which is one of the most well-respected community college teams in the country.
