Leaf Report: See Them Before They Fall!

Fall Leaf Report 1 10302014

October is a beautiful time to be in East Tennessee. Color can now be found most anywhere, though the tips of the Smoky Mountains, which are the first to change, are rapidly losing their foliage. Now is the valley’s time to shine and it certainly has some bright color popping out. A drive through the local back roads will offer lovely hues, as the lower elevations begin to peak. Those seeking to send time in the Smoky Mountains should find Little River Gorge beautiful and hiking is still good at Abrams Falls and Rainbow Falls. Cades Cove is a great destination this week and it provides both driving and hiking opportunities.

Leaf experts are concerned that a cold snap expected this weekend will impact the longevity of leaf season. Even in the valley, temperatures are expected to plummet and frost or a freeze could make leaves fall early. Those that have been waiting to take that drive or hike should probably go ahead and make plans before Mother Nature decides to supplant Fall with Winter. As is common in East Tennessee, the weather is as unpredictable as the leaves are lovely and the upcoming time change could herald a change in season and exchange the beauty of fall for winter’s majesty.
