County Clerk Frank Herndon’s office is undergoing some changes that will make things a little easier for residents and officials. Gone will be the two sticker system that represents Jefferson County’s Wheel Tax and Tennessee Registration. Instead, one sticker will represent both fees and that is just one of the changes that residents will find. A new on demand printing system will allow for vehicle registration cards to be printed at the time of purchase, rather than the office storing multiple forms and stickers. Herndon stated that sometimes Tennessee residents have trouble in other states because of the quality of the registration slips. The new cards are more substantial and will wear better than the old slips. The sticker number on the registration tag will also match the license plate number, which will be an aid for law enforcement in determining owner identification. A bar code on the registration will allow officials to scan for owner information quickly and efficiently.

Herndon became very interested in the new system after visiting a county that had already installed the on demand printing system. He said that he viewed it as a win for taxpayers because it cuts down on the amount of material that is ordered from his office and it is not as much a labor drain as the current system. The newly installed County Clerk was able to tap into state funding for $2500 of the $2900 installation costs, meaning that the tax payers only funded $400 of the new system. Herndon expects the new system, which is up and running, to be beneficial to the tax payer and to allow for even better customer service in one of the busiest offices in Jefferson County.
