Vols Heading to …….Taxslayer.com Bowl
Many Volunteer fans have been making plans to go to the University of Tennessee’s bowl game for a week now. Speculation and anticipation of which bowl was the only question left to answer, with many local media and national media outlets claiming the Vols to go to either the Liberty Bowl, Music City Bowl, or the Belk Bowl in Charlotte, NC.
The announcement was made on Sunday night to which bowl the Vols would be heading. Interestingly, the announcement spurred confusion in Vol Nation. “The Sports Source”, a television program on WATE-TV (Knoxville), tweeted out “It will indeed be the Mountaineers and Volunteers in the Liberty Bowl” Phil Steele who publishes a magazine for the SEC every season also posted on twitter “Official: Tennessee vs West Virginia in Liberty Bowl” and lastly the media production “Saturday’s Down South”, which highlights SEC football throughout the entire football season, ran a story on their website “Official: Tennessee accepts bid to play in Liberty Bowl.”
As fans rushed to the phones to purchase tickets to the Liberty Bowl, it was announced that Tennessee would actually play in the Taxslayer.com Bowl, leaving Vol Nation in shock and those previously mentioned media outlets scratching their heads.
The Taxslayer.com Bowl was never mentioned as a possibility before Sunday, in large part, because it normally goes to an SEC school with a better record than 6-6. Kudos to Dave Hart, who must be a terrific salesman, because not only will the Vols now spend their New Year’s in Jacksonville, Florida rather than Memphis, The Taxslayer.com Bowl pays out nearly double of what the other bowls do. The Taxslayer.com bowl pays 3.5 Million while the Liberty Bowl pays 2.4 Million, the Music City Bowl pays 1.8 Million, and the Belk pays out 1.7 Million.
2015 will start off in style and hopefully set the stage for a winning 2015 season, as the Vols take on the Iowa Hawkeyes (7-5) Friday January 2, 2015 in Jacksonville, Florida at 3:20 pm EST.
