Tennova Healthcare Physician Recognized for Minimally Invasive Women’s Health Surgery

Marcella Greene 1 01162015The American Institute for Minimally Invasive Surgery (AIMIS) recently inducted its first general surgeon into “The 300 Club,” which recognizes physicians who demonstrate an approach to surgery that offers patients the best cosmetic results.

Marcella Greene, M.D., a general surgeon with Premier Surgical Associates at Physicians Regional Medical Center and North Knoxville Medical Center, joins the ranks of the nation’s top 300 minimally invasive women’s health surgery specialists. Dr. Greene is the first general surgeon to be inducted into The 300 Club. Previously, all members specialized in gynecological surgery.

Lowell McCauley, M.D., an obstetrician and gynecologist at Physicians Regional Medical Center, was named the first member of The 300 Club. Gregory Glover, M.D., and Sudha Nair, M.D., obstetricians and gynecologists at Turkey Creek Medical Center, were inducted into the club last year.

To be a member of the AIMIS 300 Club, physicians must perform 70 percent or more of their surgeries using minimally invasive techniques, such as robotic-assisted surgery. The goal is to promote a less intrusive approach to hysterectomies and other abdominal procedures.

Dr. Greene has expertise in all general surgery techniques with an emphasis on minimally invasive abdominal surgery, breast surgery and thyroid surgery. She has advanced training in robotic-assisted surgery, including single-incision cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal) and colon resection.

“With robotic-assisted surgery and other minimally invasive techniques, we offer our patients the option of less pain, less blood loss, a quicker return home and better cosmetic results,” Dr. Greene said. “This is achieved through tiny incisions, often positioned in the body’s natural folds. In the case of single-incision cholecystectomy, the gallbladder is removed through a small cut in the belly button, which typically leaves no visible scars.

“Many of my patients like the single-site procedure because they can still wear a bikini,” Dr. Greene said. “Plus, they often experience immediate relief of their symptoms with little to no down-time.”

Both Physicians Regional Medical Center and Turkey Creek Medical Center are AIMIS Centers of Excellence in Women’s Health Surgery. This distinction recognizes Tennova Healthcare’s surgical expertise and continued commitment to offer women the latest minimally invasive procedures, including robotic-assisted hysterectomies and other abdominal surgeries.
