And Again!

After more than a week of freezing temperatures, incapacitating ice and a snow/slush mix, locals awoke Thursday morning to a blanket of fresh snow. Though early predictions were sketchy, the February 25th accumulations exceeded the five inch mark in some areas. While February’s wintry blast last week resulted in several power outages due to downed trees, this go around with Jack Frost has not, as of yet, had the same impact on the power lines. Though relatively deep, the most recent snowfall was without the same weight that the previous ice and snow mixture carried. As of mid day on Tuesday, Appalachian Electric was not experiencing outages in the area, which came as a welcome relief to both line crews and customers.

School children enjoyed their final allocated snow days earlier in the week, having missed out on being in the classroom since before President’s Day, and the road conditions have not yet improved enough for safe travel to and from school. Most businesses and government offices ran on abbreviated schedules and with minimal staff off and on for the past couple of weeks. Temperatures that were originally expected to reach near forty degrees struggled to rise to the freezing mark most of the week, making the possibility of a dicey evening commutes. Dueling forecasts have little consensus regarding the chances of the local area seeing more light snow accumulations tonight. However, the beginning of March is expected to bring much warmer temperatures to the region.
