The snow may be melted but residents of Jefferson County will be feeling the effects of the past harsh weather for a weeks to come. Snow, freezing rain and ice had everyone in a rush to the grocery stores, followed by days of hibernation, as Jefferson County waited for the thaw. Now it’s back to business and Jefferson County Mayor Alan Palmieri and the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce are asking that local residents focus their shopping on local businesses to help recoup some of the revenue lost during those days of inclement weather.

The Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce began the 20 on the 20th campaign in October, which encourages residents of Jefferson County to make their purchases locally. Spending money locally helps more than just the independent businesses. Sales tax money that is collected from those purchases is used to help keep Jefferson County running.

“Many businesses, local residents, friends and neighbors have lost work time and wages in the last few weeks.” Said Mayor Palmieri as he issued a proclamation declaring March 2-7 as “Shop at Home Week” to bring attention to local business and the loss that they suffered during the recent spurt of bad weather. The Mayor stated that he hopes that the proclamation will serve “To encourage residents to support local businesses and help make up at least a portion of what has been lost during the winter storms.”
