School Board Meets at DOE

The Jefferson County Board of School Commissioners were called to meeting Monday, March 9, at 4:00 pm at the Jefferson County Department of Education. First on the agenda were General Purpose Budget Amendment #9 and Federal Purpose Budget Amendment #9, both of which were accepted. These amendments cover the movement of funds, but do not change the overall fund balance. Following the amendments, a vote was passed accepting the use of the Jefferson County fairgrounds by the JCHS FFA for Safety Day, as well as by Carson-Newman University. Next, numerous overnight JCHS field trips were accepted. Lastly, the topic of central office operations during inclement weather was discussed. A few board members addressed their concerns over the central office’s accessibility during such extreme weather, and the topic was ultimately shelved to be discussed further at the next work session meeting, which has been rescheduled for April 7th, 2015. The Board briefly discussed the sewer situation at Rush Strong School. Director of Business Affairs Phagan informed the Board that they are addressing the issue, passed out pictures of the pipe at the school, and stated that the news article concerning the sewage issue was accurate.
