Local Schools Compete in Modern Woodmen Speech Contest
Local elementary and middle schools competed in the Modern Woodmen of America Speech Contest on March 31 and April 1, 2015. The topic this year was “An Interesting Landmark,” and each school district sent the top students from their local-level contest. Day one of the competition saw Carrie Thiel, from Maury Middle School, take first place, winning a trophy and $50 cash award. Maury Middle School will also receive an engraved trophy for display. Coming in second place was White Pine School’s Alexis Rolen, while Cody Griffin, another White Pine School participant, snagged third place.
On the following day Jack Emmert, a Jefferson Elementary School student, took first place, the prize money, and secured the engraved trophy for his school. Second place was taken by Gracie Henderson, another Jefferson Elementary Schools student. Abby Earley, a contestant from Jefferson Middle School, took third place.
