Helping With Housework

Growing YearsDo your children clean their rooms? Children need to own their space, and that includes cleaning it. You are not helping their development by doing it for them. In fact, you will help build self-esteem by teaching independence. Motivate your children to clean their rooms, as well as shared spaces in the house. Be creative and use your imagination. Getting the children involved in housework, gets it done faster, than everyone will have more time to relax and play.

– Stop nagging and begging. Set expectations and consequences and stick to them. As long as you use negative energy to get the work done, children will not respond well. Change your tactics to one that expects in a more pleasant manner.

– Stop playing pick-up. As long as you clean up after your children, they will expect you to do so.

– Stop cleaning their rooms. If your kids are old enough to clean their rooms, let them. If they are younger let them help.

– Make work fun. Turn on music and dance while you clean. Dancing around a room while cleaning makes the work seem like play.

– Create games such as a household treasure hunt. Clean your way to these findings. For instance, cleaning the sofa often reaps treasures (money) that has been dropped. Someone is always misplacing objects and rewards can be established for the finder.

– See who can clean their room the quickest. This is a race to the finish. Don’t forget the reward.

– Create incentives like an increase in allowance, an extended bedtime, or an outing.

– Lastly, thank them for their help. This one is important. Everyone likes to be appreciated for their contribution.
