How Old Should a Child be Before Getting a Computer

Asked AnsweredSince you are an online paper, I thought I would ask for some advise on how old a child needs to be before they get their own computer. My husband and I disagree on this issue somewhat and could use another opinion.

As with many issues in parenting, much depends on the individual child. Many children as young as a couple of years old can manage some simple programs with assistance. By third grade, children are largely doing their standardized testing on computers. A computer is a big investment so it might be best to start on a less expensive tablet before moving on to a high dollar machine. Keeping the computer in the common room of the house is always a good idea and children should always have all online activity monitored. Software can help but nothing beats parental eyes on the screen. Perhaps the best idea would be for a family computer until the child is old enough to understand the issues associated with the real and virtual world. Imposing strict guidelines will help the child navigate new, exciting and educational adventures online while maintaining safety.
