It was senior night at Jefferson County on Wednesday, and what a senior night it was for Eli Devotie. The senior left fielder went 4-4 at the plate including a walk-off grand slam home run to defeat the Gibbs Eagles, 7-6.

“For Eli to come up and get a swing like that… his dad is the president of our booster club, and has been in the hospital, but no one loves Jefferson County High School baseball more than the Devotie’s.” Head Coach Gaines Cox explained.

For Jefferson County, they are now 18-12 on the season and finished in the top-4 of the conference just one year after having the worse season in school history. “I couldn’t be happier for these guys,” Cox said of his team’s seniors. “Tonight was all about the seniors; they put in a lot of work, it was a long season last year, and they are the catalyst of our team.”

Down 6-3 heading to the bottom of the seventh inning, Jefferson County seemed poised for a let down. The seniors, however, would not be denied. Senior Silver Munguia led off the inning with a single, followed by a single by fellow senior, Kyle Briggs. Senior first basemen Malik Kyle then was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Eli Devotie then came through with his first homerun of the season, and walked off into the sunset victorious.

The seniors accounted for 10 of the 11 JCHS hits on the night. Head Coach Gaines Cox stated, “For today, it’s like a story book ending.”
