Jefferson County celebrated National Day of Prayer with services held on the steps of the Historic Jefferson County Courthouse on Thursday, May 7, 2015. This is an annual event observed on the first Thursday in May. It is designed to encourage thoughtful prayer for the Nation and its leadership from people of all faiths. Locally, several different churches and faith based organizations participate in the noon day prayer service. A resolution designating a Nation Day of Prayer was signed by President Truman in 1952 and in 1988 President Reagan designated the first Thursday in May as the official National Day of Prayer. A day of prayer has great historical significance for the United States of America, as the First Continental Congress called for a day of prayer and fasting in 1775, asking for wisdom in the forming of the Nation.
