Maury football can start being in the same conversation with Maryville and Fulton High School’s… ok, maybe not, but make no mistake about it, what the Maury Middle School football program has become is almost just as equally as impressive. The Hornets continued this impressive trend Tuesday night as they thumped Meadowview, 50-6.

Greg Manis wasn’t thrilled however, “We have a really good season, and we have had some down games.” He added, “I know it’s hard saying a down game when you score 50 points, but they came out a little lackluster. I think we have that mentality now, where we just walk out on the field and it is given to us. We will have a little prayer meeting when we get back to school.”

After jumping out to a 16-0 lead by the end of the 1st quarter, Maury wasted little time getting into scoring position in the 2nd quarter, as well. Drew Gregg found his favorite target, Austin Lietch, for a pick up of 37-yards to put the Hornets in business at the Meadowview 14. A few plays later, Gregg found his second favorite target for an 8-yard touchdown to Ryan Potts, and Maury was cruising 24-0.

Maury’s first string defense stifled Meadowview all night long; in fact, the first team defense has not allowed a single point all season long and Manis say they know it. “They take pride in that,” he stated, “They want to know as soon as the game is over if they allowed positive yards, and they get mad when the JV gives up a score, but they take a lot of pride in that goose egg.”

One player who Manis didn’t feel took the night off was Chris Hackney who scored 3 touchdowns on the night, and Manis says he is an All-American. “He played his heart out,” adding, “If he was as big as some of our other guys he would be an All-American… he is an All-American to us.”

Maury’s win streak has been extended to 23 games and are now 5-0 on the season, and are outscoring their opponents 268-26.
