Know the Opponent: Morristown West

Jefferson County played the #1 Team in the state in 6A last week, and this week doesn’t get any easier, as the Patriots travel to take on Morristown West, the #6 ranked team in class 5A. Both teams are 2-1 and both teams are hungry for a win.

Morristown West on Offense:

On offense the Trojans like to run a 3-WR set out of the pistol formation. DeAndre’ Delaney is the stud of the offense; a tailback, #29, he is a tall, lanky speedster who runs like a deer. He has offers from multiple D-1 programs, most notably Wake Forest of the ACC. Aaron Jones is the leader at the quarterback position and manages the game well, taking what the defense gives him and avoiding mistakes. When they are not in the pistol formation they like to run a shotgun set with no backs, but use Delaney in the slot position and run a jet sweep/QB option.

You will also see the back ups to Delaney and Jones, but don’t get it twisted: they are just as good as the starters and, depending on who you ask, are even better than the starters. (#8-Foreback, #2-Blevins)

Morristown West on Defense:

On defense the Trojans will run a 3-4 defense giving a 4-3 look at times by walking up the outside backer. Patriot fans, get used to hearing the name Calvin Smith. The senior safety is everywhere on the field and even plays the run very well from his safety position. The unit as whole is strong against the run, not allowing very many big gains. In the passing game they will allow short game stuff, but are very solid tackling in the open field.

Note of the game: Morristown West Head Coach Lamar Brown is a Jefferson County Alum. Jefferson County Head Coach, Kenny Cobble is a Morristown West Alum.

Prediction: Look for this game to be closer than last week’s game vs Maryville; however, I think the Patriots drop this one as well. Morristown West 28-14.
