Arkansas Sends Vols Reeling, 24-20

The Arkansas Razorbacks are the latest to team to knock off the Vols this season. With the Vols now 2-3 on the season, Tennessee needs to right the ship quickly. As I said last week on “Jefferson County Post Sports with Mike Stanley,” if the Vols were to fall to Arkansas this week they could very well be staring 2-5 right in the eye. Well, they did, and they are.

While this game wasn’t the letdown that a Florida or Oklahoma loss was, this game was probably the most important loss. Not to the fan base, that is now calling for Butch Jones’ head on a silver platter, but to the players who needed this game for a shot in the arm as Georgia comes to town this week.

The play calling was much better this week, with a 4th and 1 under center attempt that was good. Also allowing Joshua Dobbs to throw more as he went 20-36 for 232 yards. That doesn’t mean the wide receivers prospered, however, as they only had 12 catches on the night.

A team of mediocrity is what Tennessee has become. Once thought to win the SEC East, which they mathematically still can, the Vols seem like a team that is destined for the bottom part of the SEC East, which reminds me of the 2005 season in which the Vols were ranked #2 in the nation. (finished 5-7).

The Vols were outgained 494-365 on this night, but they will have a shot at redemption this week as they host a Georgia team coming off of a 38-10 beat down from Alabama. It is a 3:30 kickoff on CBS.
