The Tennessee Volunteers hosted The UNC Asheville Bulldogs for their home opener, and to introduce the Coach Rick Barnes era. The young team showed some true promise last evening, with Kevin punter scoring a career high of 31 points. Robert Hubbs III came the closest to him for the evening with 18 points.

The first half of play looked like the Vols were going to completely have this one in the bag, until late in the half, when the bulldogs began closing in on the score. Halftime found the Vols only leading by a 33-34 margin. The Volunteers would maintain that lead until about halfway in to the second half. The Bulldogs made an 8-0 against the vols, and a basket by Will Weeks tied up the game. Weeks was the lead scorer for the bulldogs, with 25 points. The last 7 minutes of the game ended up being a back and forth struggle. A couple of baskets by Kevin Punter fired the Vols back up late in the second half leading up to a 6-0 run by the Vols. Hubbs had a major block against UNC Asheville late in the second half, and immediately had to be taken off the court. This raised fears that he may have aggravated a groin injury, but he later tweeted out that it was major leg cramps, and apologized for giving everyone a scare. The Vols hit 4 free throws in the last 30 seconds of the game, which set up the nights victory over the UNC Asheville Bulldogs.

The Vols were 30-57 for fg attempts for the night, running about 52%, and were only 4-16 for three point shots taken.

Coach Rich Barns said “The good thing about it, from our point of view, is we were in the game at the end… When the game was on the line, it could’ve gone either way. We made some plays with a little more pop to it”.
