The #4 ranked Tennessee Lady Volunteers opened their season at Thompson-Boling Arena, speeding past The Central Arkansas Sugarbears 102-42.  The Lady Vols came in ready to show what they can do, scored the first 17 points of the game, and never looked back.

Kourtney Dunbar led the scoring drive with 24 points Sunday afternoon, and ran 10 for 15 in field goal attempts. She also shot 4 three-pointers. Not too far behind Dunbar, was freshman point guard, Te’a Cooper, with 22 points. Mercedes Russell, with 20 points, and Dunbar would lead in rebounds, both sophomores grabbing 13 each.

Sunday was the debut for sophomore Diamond DeShields, ACC’s rookie of the year and a North Carolina Transfer, who achieved 12 points in her first outing as a Lady Vol. Another dominate standout for the game was Alexa Middleton, who achieved 15 points, and 5 rebounds.

The Lady Vols showed poise and team effort on Sunday, as this young team reaches maturity, with only 1 senior this season. The team shot around 54.2% for field goals, and 47.4% at three point range.

Coach Holly Warlick’s team is gearing up for a late night game Wednesday, against Penn State at 8:00 p.m. This is the second game in a 8-game home stretch, and will be televised on the SEC Network.
