Nominating Committee Looks at Beer Board

The Jefferson County Nominating Committee met Monday, January 11, 2016. First on the agenda was the approval of the minutes from November 9, 2015 which were passed in a motion by Seals (2nd Douglas). Next came the nomination of the District 2 Highway Commissioner (County Commission Districts 5, 6, and 7). The Highway Commission had already recommended Conard Langston, of New Market, to complete the late Ernest Bruce Frazier’s term. After a brief discussion, Seals made a motion to accept Langston (2nd Douglas), which passed.

Next on the agenda was Beer Board Membership. In November 2015, Commissioner Tucker referred the issue to the Nominating Committee, asking that they “produce a list of at least 11 potential Beer Board members for Commission to consider in January.” After some discussion, it was decided that members of the Beer Board needed to be knowledgeable in the area of beer board laws. McGraw made a motion, appropriately seconded, for the Nominating Committee to appoint an ad-hoc committee to study beer board law and reference, consisting of five members, with a representative from the sheriff’s office serving as an advisory member (bringing the ad-hoc committee to 5 voting members, and one advisory representative). The motion was passed unanimously.

The final business of the meeting was to address any concerns with the draft of Resolution 2016-01, which is a resolution of the County Commission regarding the adoption of an amended committee organization and management plan. The resolution was referred to the Nominating Committee in November 2014 by Commissioner Turner “to take into account current committee terms, organization, policies, procedures, and clean[s] up inconsistent or erroneous language withing the resolution.” While some concerns were raised regarding exact wording, these were ultimately laid to rest with no proposed change to the draft. A final motion to adjourn by Seals (2nd Bales) ended the meeting.
