Lady Vols Triumph Over In-State Rival Vanderbilt, 58-49
Despite the snowy, cold weather, Thompson-Boling Arena was plenty hot enough Thursday night as the University of Tennessee Lady Volunteers faced off against in-state rivals, Vanderbilt.
The Lady Vols took off with a quick lead, pulling away 17-10 in the first quarter. During the first half of the battle, the Lady Vols forced 11 turnovers from the Commodores, showcasing a strong defense, with a total of 23 turnovers during the whole game. Tennessee’s defense also held Vanderbilt to only about 37% shooting for the game, and keept the Commodores at a season-low 49 points.
A late 2nd quarter rally, though, from Vandy’s offence brought the score within 3 points to end the half. Tennessee led 28-25 to end the second quarter.
The Lady Vols had a strong third quarter, and started the half 16-3. The commodores, though, had a strong fourth quarter. Vandy actually outscored Tennessee in the final ten minutes of the game 17-14. Despite a strong effort, final quarter rally by Vanderbilt was not enough. A couple of fouls and a technical later, the Tennessee Lady Volunteers defeated the Vanderbilt Commodores 58-49.
Te’a Cooper led the Lady Vols in scoring with 13 points, a strong performance from the freshman. Diamond DeShields had a impressive night, forcing a string of turnovers. Tennessee ran 40% from the field, but only ran 25% from the three-point line.
The Tennessee Lady Volunteers are traveling to Lexington on Monday to face off against the #9 Wildcats, which will prove to be a tough matchup. It will air on ESPN2 at 7:00 pm.
