50th Super Bowl Anniversary: Sunday, February 7, 2016

Super Bowl 50 will be taking place on Sunday, as the Denver Broncos face off against the Carolina Panthers in San Francisco.  With all the media hype, the chance that this could be our beloved Peyton’s last game, and, of course, the commercials, some people may wonder what’s the big deal?

One of the most watched sporting events in the world, the Super Bowl got its beginnings in 1967.  The Green Bay Packers defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 35-10 at Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles.  Over the years the Super Bowl has boasted the top 4 slots of highest rated American Television programming.  The unofficial American holiday also has the second highest food consumption, just below Thanksgiving.

The AFC leads the NFC in Super Bowl Wins 26-23, and the Pittsburgh Steelers currently have the record for the most rings at 6.  The player with the most championship rings is Charles Haley, who won 2 while playing linebacker with the 49er’s and 3 while playing defensive end with the Cowboys.

Traditionally, the NFL uses roman numerals for the Big Game’s logo, but decided to forgo the tradition for the 2016 championship game to “elevate and celebrate the history” of the 50th anniversary of the game.  Not to mention the Roman Numeral for 50 is “L”, so, simply put, using the number 50 is just more pleasing.

The championship taking place on Sunday is no exception to the long history of Super Bowls.  With a record breaking 5 million dollars a slot for a 30 second commercial, Super Bowl 50 is set to break even more records both on and off the field.
