The Jefferson County Patriots Baseball team hosted the Cocke County Fighting Cocks Tuesday night in Dumplin Valley.  After going to Newport and defeating Cocke County 10-3 on their home turf, he Patriots returned home to defend their house in the second game of the double header, and were successful in the effort.

The Patriots started the first inning on the field as host and took care of business quickly.  Good judgment on the part of the at-bats, along with successful base stealing, and the Patriots were the first to get on the board with a sneaky trip across the home plate fueled by errors from the Fighting Cocks.

The rest of the game followed suit.  The Patriots would continue to take advantage of dropped pop-flies and continuous errors by Cocke County. The bottom of the third found Nic Bennett, Mason Kirk, and Jacob Rodgers crossing the promised land, adding to the lead.  With three errors in the bottom of the fourth, Jefferson County would take advantage and extended their lead 8-0.

Cocke County finally put 1 run on the board in the top of the fifth inning.  With a base hit drawn off a wearing down Matt Bradley, the Fighting Cocks would sneak one across home plate. With two outs already, the Patriots did not allow any time for a rally. With their turn at bat, Jefferson County put two more on the board, making the score 10-1.

Cocke County’s batters finally grabbed a couple of hits in the top of the sixth, starting off with a walk.  It was too little too late for the Fighting Cocks, as the Jefferson County Patriots continued to protect their plate, only allowing Cocke County to slide three in.

An unproductive at-bat at the bottom of the sixth, and continued protection for the top of the seventh, ended the sweep of the series, with a score of 10-4.

The Jefferson County Patriots advance to 6-2 so far for the season, utilizing base hits very consistently.  They will be traveling to the Chattanooga area later in the week to play in the Ooltewah Tourney.  They are slated to face Franklin County Thursday night, Chattanooga Central Friday morning, and Cleveland Friday night.
