Even though the bats were far from quiet Monday night at Patriot Park, the Jefferson County Patriots fell to Morristown West 9-8.

Coming off a 3-1 loss at Hardin Valley Friday night, the Patriots were looking to put another win on their home turf.  The battle would not come easily for either team, and both fought hard on this rainy Monday night.

The Trojans took off in the top of the first inning, scoring 3 quickly.  The Patriots answered the call quickly, and took the lead away from Morristown West, scoring 4 runs in the bottom of the inning.  A single tapped over into left field by Johnathan Royster  and a dropped pass brought in Trevor Whitley and Matt Bradley.  Brandon Saylor brought in Royster and crossed home also, ending the first inning with a score of 3-4.

The second inning was scoreless for both teams, with both sides exhibiting a strong field effort.  The Third inning, both teams would cross home plate twice, with Royster and Bradley finding their way home once again. The Patriots still held onto the lead, 6-4 going in to the fourth inning.

At the top of the fourth, The Trojans would score three and take the lead away from the Patriots, making the score 7-6.  A worn out Matt Bradley was replaced by Dylan Frazier.

The bottom of the fifth, The Patriots brought two more in, and tied the score 8-8 and, with the sixth and the seventh innings remaining scoreless, the game went into an extra inning.

The Trojans scored in the top of the eighth inning, pulling ahead with a score of 9-8. With 2 caught pop flys and a strikeout, the Patriots went down with a heartbreaking loss on their home turf.

Even though the night put a number over on the L side, there were many highlights from this tough battle for the Patriots.  Jonathan Royster racked up 3 RBI in only 2 hits with 2 at bats.  Matt Bradley went 3 for 4 at bats, and Jacob Rogers, even though he didn’t cross home himself, brought in 2.

The loss puts the Patriots at 13-7, but they have the chance to recover Tuesday night, as they travel to Morristown for the second game in the series.
