Summer Fun to Be Had within 100 Miles of Jefferson County

During the summer months, parents and families often struggle finding fun ways to keep kids entertained and content. The same old sights and sounds begin to lose their luster, and many seek a change of pace to their summer routine. There are numerous fun things to do within 100 miles of the county that will relieve summer boredom and result in the new experiences we so desperately crave.

Looking for a day at the theatre? Check out the Cumberland County Playhouse in Crossville, Tennessee. The Cumberland County Playhouse offers a variety of shows that cater to diverse audiences. They are offering a wide selection of performances not only throughout the summer, but also throughout the year. Parents and teachers can check the Playhouses’ website for performance information that includes not only a basic synopsis about each show, but also the audience rating for the show. This way, parents and teachers can decide on the appropriate play for their specific group. General prices for the theatre vary, but tickets usually run $25 for adults and $12 for students. Group discounts are available if necessary.

What about a scenic trail skirting the classic city of Asheville? The Blue Ridge Parkway is a 469 mile trail full of a range of attractions from dining and museums, to the usual outdoor recreation. The Blue Ridge Parkway offers a swath of outdoor activities such as hiking, fishing, biking, and bird watching (along with other wildlife to appreciate). The trail also offers activities, such as wineries and vineyards, as well as numerous historic sites. The Parkway is about an hour and a half away and can be a day trip or a multi-day vacation.

How about something just for the kids? Williamsburg, Kentucky offers Kentucky Splash Water Park. Highlighted as one of Williamsburg’s top attractions, this waterpark is family-friendly and minutes away from other attractions, such as museums, lakes, and the University of the Cumberlands. The waterpark has multiple activities for the family, including a go-kart track, miniature golf course, a driving range, and a newly established campground. Visitors can come for the day or stay and play. Admission to the park is only $10 and children 2 and under get in free. The park’s opening day for the season was May 28th. Want to enjoy the sights and sounds of Etowah, Tennessee? Hiwassee River Rail Adventure offers a scenic train ride through Etowah, giving a great view of the beautiful region. The ride goes on rain or shine, and is ideal for family’s and church groups. Admission during the summer months is $40 for adults and $30 for children, while kids 3 and under are free.

Maybe something around town is of more interest? During the summer months a plethora of festivals and events are being offered in Jefferson County and in the surrounding counties. On June 18th, Dandridge will host its annual June Jubilee Festival, which will run from 10am-8pm rain or shine. The festival will offer a range of events from live music, to food and crafts, as well as activities for the kids. Festivals and day trips such as these are a sure-fire way for families and individuals to make the most of their summer.
