Happy Independence Day!

Flags are flying and fireworks are booming! The grill is heated and ready for cooking! It is July 4th and Americans are celebrating the birth of their Nation. Independence Day has become known as a day for fun and family but proud Americans never forget the reason behind the parties, community events and showers of brilliant pyrotechnics.

July 4th has been an official federal holiday since 1941 but acknowledgment of Independence Day dates back much further. In June of 1776, representatives from each of the 13 colonies began the process of making the United States of America a free country and declaring her independence from England. On July 2, 1776 the Continental Congress voted in favor of independence and on July 4, 1776 they signed the Declaration of Independence, which was drawn by Thomas Jefferson.

From then until now, many things have changed in the United States. We are no longer thirteen colonies and, as our Country has grown and changed, so has our government. But, the founding principals that found the Nation are still the threads that bind the citizens of the United States of America, from sea to sea.
