A Large Scale Time Out?

editorial-logo3I have to wonder why we expect so much more from kindergarten children than we do from politicians? If a young child lies, cheats, steals, is selfish or aggressive and pushy toward his classmate he is immediately corrected. Since when are adults entitled to acted badly based on age?

There is no room for bad behavior in government. There was a time when people knew to exhibit a little decorum when dealing with others. After all, the public eye may be near sighted but it is not totally blind. Even in this fast paced, no time for anything, world people still notice the extremes. And, I think that it is clear that the general public are sick and tired of paying people to champion their interests who simply can’t or won’t see beyond their own wants and needs.

On a national, state and local level, there has to be a shift in the way that politicians think. While most things are not clearly black or white and the people expect some gray areas, it is the wadding in muddy brown that seems to be getting to everyone. Like many people, I don’t mind a legitimate difference of opinion and neither do I mind vigorous conversation, but crossing that line is, well, crossing the line. In the same vein, an honest mistake is one thing. After all, we all make honest mistakes, but a mistake that is riddled with dishonesty has no place in our government.

Whatever the political ideology, whoever garners support, those that choose to lead, who lobby to lead, must do so with the best interest of the people at heart. There is no room to question their motives or wonder at their loyalty. Respect is both earned and learned. Those that do not deserve it and those that cannot practice it have no business representing the people. This is not a red issue and it is not a blue issue. The issue is much larger than that. We deserve leaders who respect their positions and the people that put them there. There is only one party line that should exist and it is that we, the people, expect nothing less and will accept nothing less from our elected officials. Perhaps it is time to institute a large scale time out for those that simply can’t or won’t follow the rules and play well with others.
