Some Dandridge Residents Reporting Discolored Water

Some residents in the Dandridge area may be seeing red, but according to Water Superintendent Mike Norton, that is the color of progress. Recently, the Dandridge Water Department contracted with KUB to bring water to the Dandridge area and customers are now on line with the new water supplier. Though many may see the benefit of better water pressure, those with homes that have older pipes could see a little discoloration in their water on the short term. Norton recently reported about the red tinted water that some customers are receiving to the Board of Mayor and Aldermen. He informed Town officials that the water is perfectly safe and it is a lessening in the hardness of the water that is the precipitator of the change. On the plus side, lack of pressure, which has been a long term concern of Town officials, is no longer such an issue . Norton said that a fix is in place for the water color, which is ultimately caused by oxidation in older pipes that are constructed of galvanized metal, and it is one that has been long established with KUB customers and includes the addition of Zinc Orthophosphate. However, he reiterated that the water, though it may be a little red, is safe to drink.

One by product of the new, softer water supply is that customers and their homes may find visual differences of the soft water , which translates to the possibility of shinier hair and may prolong the life of appliances. Norton said “ In the past we would have had real issues with water supply with the way that the weather has been lately but now we are in good shape.”A little more time coupled with a little more water pressure and everything should be rosy for water customers in the Dandridge area.
