This past weekend Zion Dance Company took to the stage to perform their adaptation of Max Lucado’s “You are Special,” as well as their own production entitled #kwya, or Know Who You Are. “You are Special” was originally a children’s book that focused on addressing issues such as self-image and self-worth. Zion took the simple but powerful message of the book and adapted it to audiences young and old. The company wanted to remind those watching the show about the labels placed on them by society and how they could overcome by focusing on their own positive self-worth.

Know Who You Are also followed the theme but in a less lighthearted tone. This work was designed to challenge the way audiences thought about themselves. It addressed issues such as suicide, bullying, depression, and the standards people measure themselves to. Zion explained that they created this work to leave audiences with a sense of empowerment, self-worth, and value. Zion Dance Company is a part of Fusion Studio in Jefferson City and can be reached at www.ziondance.com.
