The United Way of Jefferson County kicked off their fund raising season on Thursday evening, August 18,2016 with their annual Parade of Tables and Silent Auction. Tables were sponsored by local businesses and organizations and were decorated in their theme of choice. The People’s Choice winner for the evening, which was the table that garnered the most votes through cash donations, belonged to the Jefferson County Department of Education. Viewing of the spectacular tables began at five o’clock, followed by a catered reception and the introduction of guest speakers. Key Note Speaker for the event was newly minted Jefferson County High School Football Coach Spencer Riley. Coach Riley was introduced by Richard Hall of Modern Woodmen. Hall’s relationship with the United Way spans multiple fund raising campaigns.

In his event address, Coach Riley challenged those in attendance to initiate change by introducing one person to the United Way with the hope and expectation that that person will, in turn, introduce another to the United Way, thus growing the philanthropic organization within the community. On a lighter note, Riley gave a brief overview of the Jefferson County Patriots Football Team and what fans might expect this season.

Fund Raising Chair Bob Jarnagin, who also has a longstanding connection to the United Way, announced this year’s fund raising goal of $160,000. He reminded event goers that those monies stay in Jefferson County and will go to support various other charities that do important work for the community.
