Students, teachers, and emergency crews from across the area gathered together for a day of hands-on education at Rush Strong School’s 12th annual Red Ribbon Day. Students had been working toward the day all week, learning about staying away from drugs, tobacco, and alcohol through the school’s D.A.R.E program.

Educators wanted to bring in area law enforcement agencies on campus to work with students in the ever-changing environment around their homes and community. Organizers hope that Red Ribbon Day gives students the expertise to recognize, and confidence to just say “no,” in situations involving drugs and alcohol. Jefferson County Sheriff G.W. “Bud” McCoig wanted to express his thanks to all emergency personnel who donated their time and effort to the event.

New Market Sherriff Sammie Soloman stressed the importance of the event for students involved not only now, but in the future. Soloman stated that through programs like D.A.R.E kids have the opportunity to say “no” to limiting circumstances, and can embrace a successful drug-free future in careers, such as law enforcement or other walks of life that may be closed off. Personnel all the way from Knox and Anderson counties joined local law enforcement in supporting the event at Rush Strong School.
