The Jefferson County Lady Patriots hosted the Seymour Lady Eagles Monday night. The matchup, one of four games in the district that took place, was the first round of the District 2 AAA Girls Tournament. Aiming to advance further, the Lady Patriots took to the court hoping for a repeat of the last time they hosted the Lady Eagles.

The Lady Patriots got off to a slow start, only gaining eight points in the first quarter of play. Despite many attempts from the field and within the paint, Jefferson County just could not hit paydirt. About halfway through the first, the Lady Patriots found their groove, and ended the quarter up by six. The second quarter did not prove to be beneficial for the girls of Jefferson County. Even though the Lady Patriots were able to maintain their lead, the Lady Eagles went on to outscore during the second, 10-9. Halftime sent the Lady Patriots to the locker room only ahead by five; 17-12.

Jefferson County came out on fire for the second half. Scoring 20 points in the third quarter alone, they built their defenses, only allowing Seymour to add four to their score. A strong series of completions by Ryleigh Fritz set the tone for most of the quarter, as Jefferson County added to their lead.

The fourth quarter score gap allowed the starters to take a break, allowing the secondary to come out and finish business. The Jefferson County Lady Patriots advance forward in the tourney, taking the win 48-24.

Junior Ryleigh Fritz lead the scoring drive for the evening with 15, and Senior Makaila Woolard shot for 10.

Also in the district, South Doyle fell to Morristown West 85-35, Morristown East defeated Cocke County 61-36, and Cherokee squeezed by Sevier County 44-39.

The Lady Patriots will host Morristown East on Wednesday. The last time the two faced off, Jefferson County walked away with the win, 40-34. The Hurricanes always prove to be a tough opponent for the Lady Patriots, and with more at stake, this will be a tough battle for Jefferson County. Tipoff will be at 7 p.m. at JCHS.
