Happy Mother’s Day 2017!

Mother’s Day is celebrated this year on Sunday, May 14th, 2017. The holiday is typically used to celebrate motherhood and mother figures in our lives. Mother’s Day traditionally falls on the second Sunday in May since its official introduction as a holiday in 1914.

Mother’s Day became popular through the efforts of many women abolitionists and activists. Anna Jarvis is the most commonly known in relation to the holiday in the United States. Jarvis created the “Mother’s Day Work Club” before the days of the Civil War to teach women of the time how to properly care for their children. The club became a unifying force during the time of war.

Jarvis would begin petitioning for Mother’s Day to be an official holiday in memory of her own mother. Eventually her campaigning and petitioning would pay off in 1914, with President Woodrow Wilson signing the holiday into history.

Today, Mother’s Day is traditionally marked with the giving of gifts, such as flowers, cards, and phone calls, and the day is being celebrated all around the world. Experts have noted a thirty-seven percent spike in phone traffic on the holiday. Happy Mother’s Day from all of us at the Jefferson County Post.
