Tips on Finding Good, Cheap Fun for the Summer

Summer is just around the corner for many kids across the area. Carefree days and long nights under the stars are fast approaching. However, if you are a parent, the few months of your child’s summer can be a stressful time. How are you going to keep the kids happy and occupied while you, in turn, keep your sanity? Luckily, there are several events that are going on over the summer around the area that are either free or cost very little.

Several churches around the area will be holding their annual vacation bible school programs for kids of all ages. Check with your specific church through their social media or word of mouth to know when these events are taking place. The kids have the opportunity to make new friends, further their religious studies, connect with people who care about them, and make a craft all in one. These programs are a great, free event that can start a yearly tradition.

If your kids are into fishing and the great outdoors, then there are numerous youth fishing events this summer that are free. Campy Jordan Kid’s Fishing Day will take place on June 3rd at Camp Jordan Arena Park Pond. The event is available to families with children ages 6 to 15. The TWRA is also teaming up with the City of Clarksville Parks and Recreation Department to host the Annual Youth Fishing Rodeo. The event will take place on June 10 at Liberty Park in Clarksville, and is open to families with kids from infancy to 16 years old.

For those with older kids that are hoping to put some education into their summer fun, Shakespeare on the Square is always a good (free!) option. It features two plays put on by the Shakespeare Stage Company on Market Square in Knoxville. This year will feature The Complete Works of Shakespeare (Abridged) and Two Gentlemen of Verona. The event runs from July 13 – August 13 at 7:00 pm nightly, from Thursday to Sunday.

Maybe you want to treat the kiddos to a movie but don’t want to pay regular prices? Governors Crossing in Sevierville is hosting a movie matinee for kids starting June 13th. At 10 a.m. every Tuesday and Thursday the theatre will show a family friendly film. Movies start at just $3.60 and include a kiddie combo.

Another free local event that you can take the entire family is June Jubilee. June Jubilee will take place on Saturday, June 17, and will be in the heart of downtown Dandridge. The event will feature local music, crafts, vendors, and plenty of food. The whole family will have plenty to keep themselved entertained for a great Saturday of fun. These are just a few suggestions on what you can do with the kids this summer. Whatever you decide to do, make sure that you savor every moment in the attempt to make this summer the best yet.
