PUBLIC NOTICE TO FILL VACANCY

Due to the resignation of Jefferson County Constable Jerry E. Colbert, 1st District, effective December 12, 2017, the Jefferson County Board of Commissioners, meeting in Regular Session, Tuesday, January 16, 2018, at 6:30 p.m. in the Main Courtroom of the Jefferson County Courthouse, 202 W. Main Street, Dandridge, Tennessee, has placed the filling of this vacancy on the Agenda. District 1 includes the following voting precinct: Dandridge Elementary School.

To qualify for election or appointment to the office of constable, a person shall:
1. Be at least twenty-one (21) years of age;
2. Be a qualified voter of the district which they represent;
3. Possess at least a high school diploma or General Educational Development
(GED) certificate;
4. Not have been convicted in any federal or state court of a felony; and
5. Not have been separated or discharged from the armed forces of the United
States with other than an honorable discharge.

Any individual interested in being considered for election or appointment to the office of constable are asked to file an “Affidavit for Election to the Office of Constable”. The recommended deadline to submit an affidavit is Thursday, January 11, 2018, in the Jefferson County Commission Office, Jefferson County Courthouse, Room 104, 202 W. Main Street, Dandridge, Tennessee, before 12:00 noon to allow Commissioners time to review documents before the commission meeting.

Before County Commission votes or considers any motion regarding the office to be filled, the Commission Chairman shall allow registered voters of the county an opportunity to submit names to the County Commission for consideration. Names may be submitted in writing to the Commission Chairman prior to the meeting or may be submitted in person at the meeting. In order for a name to be considered, a member of the County Commission must subsequently nominate the person. Members of the County Commission may also nominate a candidate or candidates to fill the office or vacancy without the name or names being submitted by a voter. If the person nominated is not present at the meeting, the person making the nomination shall submit a signed statement from the nominee that he/she is willing to serve in the office if appointed.
